Polyethylene globes are economical and have excellent abrasion and impact resistance making them difficult to break from storm damage and vandals, which are the most common causes of globe breakage. In addition polyethylene globes have an appearance similar to frosted glass which makes them an ideal globe solution for many antique style street lamp applications however most polyethylene globes are not suitable for HID lighting applications such as high pressure sodium and metal halide lighting.
Polycarbonate globes are the most common type of globe used in commercial street lamp solutions. Polycarbonate has an excellent impact and abrasion resistance along with high heat resistance, UV, and chemical resistance making the material very durable. The UV resistance of polycarbonate globes will give several years of service without yellowing. The heat resistance and aesthetically pleasing appearance of polycarbonate globes makes them the best globe choice for HID lighting applications.
